In the early 90s these death metal progenitors helped shape the blueprint of death metal together with such illustrious genre peers as Death and Morbid Angel. No frills, just balls-to-the-wall metal that knocks the wind out of your pipes. John Tardy’s retching vocals, brother Donald’s groovy drums, menacing riffs, the band’s overall brutality and the rapidly alternating fast and slow sections are trademark characteristics of their output. ‘Slowly We Rot’, ‘Cause of Death’ and ‘The End Complete’ are quintessential death metal albums. Worn down by the endless touring, Obituary disbanded in the late 90s but they resurfaced 8 years later with the aptly titled ‘Frozen in Time’ (2005). Following the release of ‘Inked in Blood’ (2014) they embarked on the Deathcrusher Tour with Carcass, Napalm Death and Voivod. Released in 2017, their most recent, self-titled album ‘Obituary’ contains some of their most vital and energetic work since reforming in the early nineties!
